We've all done it, walked into the kitchen in response to a strange, acrid odor emulating from the stove to find a pot left to long over the flame. Life gets in the way of cooking and we get distracted.
Well that pot is not ruined. Take it, in full heat (with pot holders of course)and place it right side up in about an inch or two of cool water. The dishpan works well for this. This should have the effect of saving any unburnt food from tasting scorched as well as allowing much easier cleaning of said pot.
When you put the scorched pot into the cold water it will hiss and sizzle. Do not let that stop you, let it sit in the cool water for five minutes or so before removing the lid and the still usable (not burnt) food. After you have the usable food out put the pot to soak with soapy water for an hour or so. It will surprise you with how easy it is to clean up!
