I recently discovered a very neat way to do a three stitch button hole from a biscuit blanket pattern. Here are the directives:
1) K to where you want your buttonhole to start; bring yarn to front, slip 1 stitch.
2) Bring yarn to back after slipped stitch and drop yarn.
3) *Slip 1 stitch; cast 1 stitch off*; repeat until three stitches have been cast off.
4) Slip last cast off stitch from right needle back to left.
5) Turn work.
6) Pick up hanging yarn and pass to back of work.
7) Cast on 4 stitches using the Cable Cast On Method, as follows:
a. Slip right needle between first two stitches on left needle.
b. YO and pull yarn through the two stitches.
c. Slip the newly formed stitch from the right needle to the left and knit that stitch.
d. Pass the knitted stitch back to the left needle.
e. Repeat this action until you have cast on 4 new stitches.
Slip last cast on stitch back to right needle.
9) Bring yarn forward between needle tips. Slip stitch on right needle back to left needle.
10) Turn work.
11) Slip the first stitch on the left needle back onto the right needle once more and cast that stitch off.
Hope this helps. I'm doing all my buttonholes this way from now on.
