I have found a local charity to knit for, Union Mission, I don't know if they are just a local organization or if there are others around the country but they just built a new men's shelter and a women's and family selter and according to the lady I spoke to they serve 225-300 people per day, the homeless and indigent, giving them food, a place to live and they help them get back on their feet.
I told her I had been knitting scarves and wanted to donate thm and she said they would love to have them so once I get about 8 or 10 I will take them to her. I think I also have a friend who wants to knit for them also. What I am looking for, since I am currently unemployed, is a way to get free or very inexpensive yarn. I thought about going to the various thrift stores to see what they have and if the sweaters are in good shape to just donate them as is but if they are a bit worn to frog them and make scarves or mittens or hats or something.
Does anyone know of any yarn company that might donate small amounts of yarn for something like this? I know they might question that an individual is doing this but I could supply them a letter from Union Mission to verify that it is legitimate.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Try stopping into your local yarn shop, they may have odd skeins that are left or returned after a project is finished. If you tell them you will give them advertising to the knitted article recipient and to other knitters in the area who are helping you with the work, they may jump in with a knitable bit. Ya never know, they may even let you use your their space to do your charatable knitting as a group. Also put up requests at yoru ibrary adn local supermarkets.
