hi
am having one of those mental blocks.. Embarassed trying to recall what those things are called that Mother and Grandma used to pin to the backs of living room chairs in the 40s..they were filet crochet for the most part, and some had nifty designs, not unlike the dresser scarves Granny made that I cherish..the chair back covers were called something that, I think, sounded something like amadascar...anyone here remember??
if so, thanks in advance..and, yepper, I'm considering knitting some. The topic came up today in my Yahoo knitting group, and we could not recall the correct term/name for them.

oh Lilybee, thank you ever so much! Now I'll be able to sleep...I've passed the info along to my online friend who shared my curiosity [we both were so close but neither of us could quite get it]

I've a couple of books with lace knitting designs that I bought from Dover..I'll probably choose one of those. I'll get back to you when I pick one

thanks again! Very Happy

Your are right! I remembered the word and looked it up on Merriam-Webster Online. Main Entry: an·ti·ma·cas·sar
Pronunciation: \ˌan-ti-mə-ˈka-sər\
Function: noun
Etymology: anti- + Macassar (oil) (a hairdressing)
Date: 1849
: a cover to protect the back or arms of furniture

I remember my grandmother having some, too. And my friend across the road's grandma, too...she called them doilies, but they were to protect the chairs and sofas.
